Cancer Vulva: Cancer of the Vulva is the least common malignancies affecting the Women.
It typically manifests in the post-menopausal age group of women. It’s more common in women more than age 60. The disease typically manifests as a persistent lesion causing itching over the Vulva along with excessive discharge. On examination, one can use a vulvoscope in order to examine and study the lesions which can lead to cancer of the Vulva. Many elderly women, often ignore these problems, which leads to a delay in the diagnosis of this condition.
The treatment is Surgical Management for Early Stage tumours which are less than 2cm in size. Apart from the size of the lesion, the location of these tumours also plays a very important role in the assessment of operability of this disease. These lesions of the Vulva are often closely situated near the clitoris, vagina, urethra or the anus and a careful assessment with a great insight of reconstruction has to be kept in mind while planning for surgical management. The typical surgical management includes, either a wide local excision or a hemivulvectomy with or without dissection of ipsilateral or bilateral inguino-femoral group of lymph nodes.
In the advanced stage of the disease, Chemoradiation is the primary treatment of choice.
The surgical approach has its own set of complications, especially with wound breakdown and infections, both of which can be notorious and can be very difficult to treat.
