The Navinna Ayurvedic Research Centre in co-ordination with Sri Jayawardenapura, Kelaniya and Peradeniya universities has embarked on a venture to treat liver cancer patients. The principal aim of the project is to prolong the life cycle of cancer patients.
Retired ayurvedic physician Nimal Jayathilaka and Kelaniya university professor Dr.Irene Thabrew have done extensive research on the efficacy of ayurvedic drugs in treating patients with liver cancer, Navinna Ayurvedic Research Centre said.
Dr. Nimal Jayathilaka told The Island that research carried out by the Ayurvedic Research Centre and universities had revealed that the life expectancy of cancer patients could be prolonged with the proper administration of hereditary ayurvedic treatment.
He said that his forefather was an Ayurvedic physician and had treated a large number of cancer patients over two decades. He had learned the ancient herbal medicinal formula from his father.
Navinna Ayurvedic Research Centre Director Dr.Dayanganee Senasekara said that experiments carried out on the efficacy of animals with liver cancer and other types of cancers had shown successful results.
She said that in 2005 there were about 13,364 cancer patients in Sri Lanka, Of whom 7306 were women. Cancer patients were beginning to realize the value of ayurvedic medicine in the treatment of cancer and were interested in obtaining the services of ayurvedic physicians to prolong their life expectancy.
