Professor Pascal Hammel, a gastroenterologist at Hospital Beaujon discusses how Pancreatic NET (Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumours) can be diagnosed and also highlights some of the treatments for patients living with the condition.
Prof. Hammel explains that surgery is a likely course of action if the patient is healthy enough to undergo an operation. If they are not, medical treatments are chosen.
Surgery depends upon the size and extensiveness of the tumour, it often involves resection of the pancreas or liver and in extreme cases can even mean liver transplantation. In cases of relapse, medication is often used followed by another course of surgery although a combination of treatments is most often used.
Prof. Hammel goes on to discuss that Pancreatic NET represents less than 1% of all pancreatic tumours and remains an extremely rare form of cancer. Pancreatic NET is slow growing and this leads many doctors to be optimistic about the outcomes of surgery.
