Can Adults Get Medulloblastoma
Survival rates in children with medulloblastoma depend on the patient's age and how much the tumor spreads. If the disease has not spread, survival rates are around 70 to 80 percent. If the disease has spread to the spinal cord, the survival rate is about 60 percent. The following genetic conditions are associated with a higher risk of developing medulloblastoma: Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) Turcot syndrome (a subtype of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or Lynch syndrome) BRCA1 gene mutations.Although treatment is successful for most children with a brain tumor, sometimes it is not. If a child's tumor cannot be cured or controlled, this is called advanced or terminal medulloblastoma. This diagnosis is stressful, and advanced medulloblastoma may be difficult to discuss.Medulloblastoma is a type of brain cancer that starts in the part of the brain called the cerebellum.
