Brain tumors are becoming increasingly more treatable, especially the benign brain tumors like meningiomas.
Early diagnosis and high degree of suspicion are key elements for cure.
This case presentation is of a benign brain tumor called meningioma. In this particular case it was attached to the motor strip. The surgery in such cases can be tricky because of its proximity to areas of the brain which supply the hands and leg movements (Motor Strip).
Getting treatment in specialized centres which treat brain tumors frequently is essential to good outcome. Expertise and modern equipment play a great role in treating these difficult brain tumors successfully. Brain tumor success stories or brain tumor survivor stories are important to understand the disease process and give hope. This is one such story of a patient who had a benign brain tumor called motor strip meningioma and who emerged successfully from this surgery, intact.

What are the symptoms of brain tumour?
They are varied, but typically include: Headaches, Nausea and vomiting, Double vision, Irritability, loss of balance while walking, giddiness, convulsions or fits, drowsiness or loss of consciousness etc. As the brain tumours progressively increase in size, they hamper the function of the part of the brain where they are growing. This set of symptoms varies greatly depending on the area the tumour occupies. For example: progressive loss of power of either hands or legs or both, language function could be hampered and cause inability to comprehend language, hormonal imbalances, failing vision etc.

What are the types of Brain Tumors?
Broadly, Brain tumors may be classified as benign brain tumors and malignant brain tumors. Benign means they are not cancerous and malignant means cancerous. A complete excision of benign brain tumors gives the patient an almost normal life expectancy. Benign brain tumors are typically meningiomas. Malignant brain tumors are gliomas, astrocytomas, glioblastomas, medulloblastomas etc

Can Brain tumors be treated?
Yes, of course! Both benign and malignant brain tumors can be successfully treated. Surgery is one effective way to treat most brain tumors. This may or may not be followed by radiation or chemotherapy, as applicable. Of course, final decisions are made on individual basis. Hydrocephalus may be a consequence of the position or size of the brain tumor. Occasionally, the hydrocephalus is to be treated before the actual brain tumor is excised.

Can brain tumors be treated successfully?
Yes, of course! Benign brain tumors are more amenable for a lifetime cure. That is the point of sharing these incredible success stories in the series. Brain cancer surgery can be simple or complicated depending on the size and location of the tumor. While Chemotherapy, radiation and cyberknife treatments are possible in the treatment of brain tumors, it is not the mainstay.
