Why are Deep breathing and core exercise so important for lymphedema and a healthy lymphatic system?
Let's look at the pathways of lymphatics.
The lymphatic fluid from your legs comes up to the lymph nodes in the groin region. This fluid moves into deep channels and vessels in the abdomen and then makes its way up to a collecting duct by your collarbone, called the thoracic duct, before draining through valves back to the heart.
The lymphatic fluid from your left arm also drains into this duct, while the right arm drains into a separate duct called the right lymphatic duct. But then both connect to vessels to drain back to the heart.
If the area in the abdomen gets congested, then the legs and arms won't be able to move fluid through and there may be even more pooling in the legs or arms.
Deep breathing and muscle activation can help stimulate the lymphatic system and keep everything moving!
