A survivor and former Brutus Buckeye performer is calling on his fellow central Ohioans to support adolescent and young adult cancer research.

Gabe Gemberling was a student at Ohio State — where he performed as the famous mascot, Brutus Buckeye — when he was diagnosed with periosteal osteosarcoma.

Gemberling received treatment at the OSUCCC – James, and has since become an advocate for AYA cancer research, along with his wife, Lexi.

Adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15-39 are recognized as a population with unique treatment and adjustment needs that require specialized care. AYA patients encounter different, age-related challenges because of the developmental milestones that commonly occur in this stage of life.

Among the events that the Gemberlings support is the annual Columbus Mac & Cheese festival, hosted by the NextGen James Ambassador’s Society, which raises funds for Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancer research at The James.
