In this video, Dr. Jay R Anam (Breast cancer surgeon, SSO Hospital, Mumbai) will answer the frequently asked questions about the survival rate of breast cancer and its various other modalities.

The survival rate of breast cancer is also known as breast cancer prognosis. A cancer patient is said to be cured if he does not show recurrence of cancer for 5 years after the cancer treatment.

There are 3 anatomical stages of breast cancer that doctors use to determine the treatment method required to treat a patient.
These stages are as follows:

Localized breast cancer – In this stage cancer hasn’t spread outside the breast. The 5-year survival rate in localized breast cancer is around 99%.

Regional breast cancer – During this stage the breast cancer has spread to the axillary nodes or the internal mammary nodes. The 5-year survival rate in regional breast cancer is around 86%.

Distance spread – In this case, cancer has already spread to various organs of the body. It becomes difficult to treat such patients. If proper treatment procedure is followed the 5-year survival rate is around 25%.

Normally, women below 45yrs who detect breast cancer show signs of aggressive cancer. The 5-year survival rate in these women is around 85% to 88%. The survival rate of women above 45yrs is approximately 92%.
