April 29th is the annual Day of Immunology. To celebrate, ThymiStem in collaboration with animator Cameron Duguid have created a beautiful, hand drawn animation explaining the function of the thymus, an essential organ of the immune system.  The video shows how T cells, a type of white blood cell, go through a complex journey in the thymus to become mature immune cells ready to fight off infection.  Given how essential the thymus is for a healthy immune system, ThymiStem scientists are trying to understand how to they can use stem cells to repair and regenerate this organ. Their ultimate goal is to develop therapies for patients with damaged or absent thymuses. Such treatments will also be of great value to the elderly, as the thymus becomes smaller and less able to produce the T cells necessary to fight infections as we age.  To learn more about the exciting research being carried out by ThymiStem visit thymistem.org.

Nicolas Girard, MD, PhD, Institut Curie, Paris, France, outlines the investigation into treatment strategies for patients with thymic carcinomas in the real-world clinical practice setting using the prospective Réseau tumeurs THYMiques et Cancer (RYTHMIC) database. Treatment based on tumor staging and in light of exiting guidelines is discussed, including treatment sequencing. Prof. Girad recommends genome profiling for the identification of oncogenic alterations that can be treated with targeted therapies. This interview took place during the virtual European Lung Cancer Congress 2022.

Prof Michael den Bakker, Erasmus-MC University Medical Centre, Rotterdam, Netherlands, talks about tumours of the thymic epithelium. These tumours range from benign to malignant with the potential for metastases and can be difficult to diagnose depending on the type. Thymic carcinoma has no histological features and is consequently can only be identified by excluding the possibility of lung metastases, however thymomas are carcinomas of the thymic gland and are more easily identified, giving thymoma patients have a much better prognosis. Prof den Bakker discusses how thymomas are typed and staged, outlines the treatment options available for thymoma patients and explains the relative merits of different classification systems for thymic tumours.
