Amyloidoses are a group of diseases characterised by the deposition of insoluble proteins which aggregate into distinctive fibrillar forms. Familial amyloid polyneuropathies are autosomal dominant in their inheritance and are defined according to the precursor protein of amyloid—transthyretin, apolipoprotein A-1, or gelsolin.
