Kaposi sarcoma
Definition:
âĸ malignant, multifocal, highly vascularized tumor caused by the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8 )
Classification:
âĸ HIV-associated Kaposi sarcoma
Clinical features
âĸ Multiple cutaneous or visceral, elevated tumors with rapid growth
âĸ Initial manifestation on skin and mucosae (especially face/oral cavity and chest)
âĸ Over time, organ involvement is possible.
âĸ If the gastrointestinal tract is involved: abdominal pain and diarrhea, possibly hemorrhage and bowel obstruction if severe
Diagnostics
âĸ Skin biopsy: spindle-shaped cells, leukocyte infiltration, and angiogenesis.
âĸ Chest x-ray, sonography of the abdomen and lymph nodes
Treatment
âĸ Treatment of the underlying disease â antiretroviral treatment in HIV patients
âĸ Symptomatic therapy:
âĸ Local: intralesional administration of vinblastine or radiation therapy
âĸ Systemic: pegylated liposomal doxorubicin or liposomal daunorubicin
âĸ Prognosis: very variable
