Kaposi sarcoma

Definition:
โ€ข malignant, multifocal, highly vascularized tumor caused by the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8 )

Classification:
โ€ข HIV-associated Kaposi sarcoma

Clinical features
โ€ข Multiple cutaneous or visceral, elevated tumors with rapid growth
โ€ข Initial manifestation on skin and mucosae (especially face/oral cavity and chest)
โ€ข Over time, organ involvement is possible.
โ€ข If the gastrointestinal tract is involved: abdominal pain and diarrhea, possibly hemorrhage and bowel obstruction if severe

Diagnostics
โ€ข Skin biopsy: spindle-shaped cells, leukocyte infiltration, and angiogenesis.
โ€ข Chest x-ray, sonography of the abdomen and lymph nodes

Treatment
โ€ข Treatment of the underlying disease โ†’ antiretroviral treatment in HIV patients
โ€ข Symptomatic therapy:
โ€ข Local: intralesional administration of vinblastine or radiation therapy
โ€ข Systemic: pegylated liposomal doxorubicin or liposomal daunorubicin
โ€ข Prognosis: very variable
