Cholangiocarcinoma is a type of cancer that originates in the cells lining the bile ducts, which are the tubes that carry bile from the liver to the small intestine. The symptoms, investigations, and treatment of cholangiocarcinoma can vary depending on the location and stage of the cancer.

Symptoms:
1. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
2. Abdominal pain or discomfort
3. Unexplained weight loss
4. Fatigue
5. Itchy skin
6. Pale stools and dark urine
7. Loss of appetite
8. Fever
Investigations:
1. Imaging tests: These may include abdominal ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or positron emission tomography (PET) scan to visualize the bile ducts and identify any abnormalities.
2. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): This procedure combines endoscopy and X-rays to examine the bile ducts and take tissue samples for biopsy.
3. Biopsy: A sample of tissue is taken from the suspicious area to confirm the diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma and determine the type and stage of cancer.
4. Blood tests: These may include liver function tests and tumor markers such as CA 19-9.
Treatment:
The treatment options for cholangiocarcinoma depend on the stage and location of the cancer, as well as the overall health of the patient. They may include:
1. Surgery: This is the preferred treatment when possible. It may involve removing part of the bile duct, the gallbladder, and surrounding tissues. In some cases, a liver transplant may be recommended.
2. Radiation therapy: High-energy beams are used to kill cancer cells or shrink tumors. It can be used before surgery to shrink tumors or after surgery to destroy remaining cancer cells.
3. Chemotherapy: Drugs are used to kill cancer cells throughout the body. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery (neoadjuvant), after surgery (adjuvant), or in advanced cases to help control symptoms.
4. Targeted therapy: This involves using drugs that specifically target certain genetic mutations or abnormal proteins in cancer cells.
5. Palliative care: This focuses on managing symptoms and improving the quality of life for patients with advanced cholangiocarcinoma.

Abstract: Systemic mastocytosis is a heterogeneous disease of the bone marrow with abnormal proliferation and infiltration of mast cells in the skin and viscera, including the mucosal surfaces of the digestive tract. Colorectal carcinoma (Colon Cancer) is the 3rd to 4th most common type of cancer, that is more likely to occur in older patients, those with a family history of colorectal cancer and in those with a history of inflammatory bowel disease. Colon cancer causes a variety of signs and symptoms, including weird and atypical findings we don’t often think about. In this lesson, we discuss what these “weird” signs and symptoms are and why they occur.

Irina Bancos, M.D., an endocrinologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and Jamie J. Van Gompel, M.D., a neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic's campus in Minnesota, discuss Mayo's multidisciplinary approach to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary tumors. Pituitary tumors are common and often don't cause problems. But some pituitary tumors produce the hormone ACTH, which stimulates the production of another hormone (cortisol). Overproduction of cortisol can result in Cushing syndrome, with signs and symptoms such as weight gain, skin changes and fatigue. Cushing syndrome is rare but can cause significant long-term health problems.
Treatment for Cushing syndrome caused by a pituitary tumor generally involves surgery to remove the tumor. Radiation therapy and occasionally adrenal surgery may be needed to treat Cushing syndrome caused by ACTH-secreting pituitary tumors. Mayo Clinic has experience with this rare condition.
