Doug Olson may be 75 years old, but he feels great. He's still cancer-free 11 years after he potentially faced death from a blood cancer called chronic lymphocytic leukemia. At that time, his doctors informed him that the treatments he had been trying we not working.

"Terrified is probably the best word to describe it," Olson told CBNNews.

Feeling he had nothing to lose, Doug agreed to an experimental treatment developed at the University of Pennsylvania called CAR-T therapy. It uses the patient's own immune system, specifically the T-cells.

Liver cancer is difficult to diagnose, but that may change with a recent Singapore discovery. Doctors have found that aggressive liver cancer cells behave like fetal cells. These cancer cells secrete a protein found in the blood of pregnant women, so they escape detection by the body's immune system. Principal investigator of the study, Professor Pierce Chow, who is also a liver surgeon with the National Cancer Centre, shared how the findings could help with early diagnosis of liver cancer.

Lymphoma is cancer that begins in infection-fighting cells of the immune system, called lymphocytes. These cells are in the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and other parts of the body. When you have lymphoma, lymphocytes change and grow out of control.

There are two main types of lymphoma:

Non-Hodgkin: Most people with lymphoma have this type.
Hodgkin
Non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphoma involve different types of lymphocyte cells. Every type of lymphoma grows at a different rate and responds differently to treatment.

Lymphoma starts in infection-fighting lymphocytes.
Leukemia starts in blood-forming cells inside bone marrow.
Lymphoma is also not the same as lymphedema, which is a collection of fluid that forms in body tissues when there is damage or blockage to the lymph system.

Most people don’t survive pancreatic cancer - it kills 88 percent of its patients.

But a study of a small group of cancer patients might hold some reassuring results.

Dr. Neeha Zaidi, an oncologist with Johns Hopkins' Kimmel Cancer Center, cares for pancreatic cancer patients, and helped peer-review the study.

"This study looks at a very hard disease," Zaidi said. "Pancreas cancer, which is resistant to most therapies."

A vaccine, the study shows, could help prevent the disease from happening again.

“Basically, what the vaccine does is, to teach, or to educate, one’s own immune system to recognize the cancer as foreign, and attack it," Zaidi told WMAR-2 News.
