March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and screening and prevention are so important for this disease. Doctorpedia is proud to work with engaging and empathetic doctors who are passionate about patient education. If you or someone you know fits the screening criteria for colorectal cancer (men ages 45 and older who are average risk) they should get screened with a colonoscopy.
In this video, colon and rectal surgeon Dr. Ray Scott Daugherty explains that occasionally patients will be diagnosed with hemorrhoids but actually have anal or rectal cancer. It's important to get evaluated if you have any perianal, perirectal, or anorectal discomfort and bleeding.
We are building doctor-led video journeys for all of the major cancer types. Check out the video journeys and the latest news and developments in cancer on our Cancer Channel: https://www.doctorpedia.com/channel/cancer/

Anal cancer is a type of cancer that forms in tissues of the anus.
The anus is the opening of the rectum to the outside of the body and at the end of the GI tract.
Sometimes anal cancer causes no symptoms at all. But bleeding is often the first sign of the disease. The bleeding is usually minor. At first, most people assume the bleeding is caused by hemorrhoids (painful, swollen veins in the anus and rectum that may bleed).
While symptoms are more likely to be caused by benign (non-cancer) conditions, like hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or anal warts, if you experience anal bleeding, it’s important that you have it checked by a doctor so that the cause can be found and treated, if needed.

Back in April, Deborah James came on the show to raise awareness about bowel cancer and hoped to help people get over the embarrassment of talking about certain types of cancer. Tracey O’Keefe realised she had all the symptoms of anal cancer but hadn’t had the confidence to go to the doctors. Dr Hilary joins them to discuss the symptoms and why you shouldn’t be embarrassed to talk to your GP.

When Michele Longabough was diagnosed with stage four anal cancer, she not only had to deal treatment for a late-stage cancer; she also had to face the stigma of anal cancer. Many of the people Michele encountered weren’t familiar with anal cancer or felt uncomfortable talking about it. As a cancer survivor, Michele is working to change that stigma and offering hope for newly diagnosed patients.
When Michele’s cancer returned, she underwent anal cancer treatment at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. She is now cancer-free. Read her story: http://www2.mdanderson.org/can....cerwise/2014/05/step
