What is a stoma?

What is an ileostomy?
Ileostomy is a stoma constructed by bringing the end or loop of small intestine (the ileum) out onto the surface of the skin, or the surgical procedure which creates this opening. Intestinal waste passes out of the ileostomy and is collected in an artificial external pouch which is adhered to the skin. Ileostomies are usually sited above the groin on the right hand side of the abdomen.
What is a colostomy?
A colostomy is a stoma in the large intestine (the colon) where an opening is formed by drawing the healthy end of the colon through an incision in the abdominal wall. This opening provides an alternative channel for feces to leave the body and collected in a stoma bag appliance. The word "colostomy" often refers either to an artificial anus and is usually sited on the left hand side of the abdomen.
