Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an inherited disorder that causes the development of benign tumors in the gastrointestinal tract, as well as dark-colored lesions on the skin and mucous membranes. PJS is caused by mutations in a gene called STK11, which normally helps regulate cell growth and division. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, bleeding, and bowel obstruction. While there is no cure for PJS, treatment options can include surgery to remove tumors and close monitoring for complications. People with PJS also have an increased risk for certain types of cancer, particularly in the colon, breast, and ovary.
