In silico comparative transcriptomic analysis of endemic and epidemic Kaposi’s sarcoma - By Harini
Research Project Presentation by our research fellow - Harini Balasubramanian on In silico comparative transcriptomic analysis of endemic and epidemic Kaposi’s sarcoma
Project Overview:-
Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is a viral neoplasm that manifests as lesions on skin, mucous membranes and inside the body, as well as swelling in the lymph nodes. This study aims to understand the two subtypes of Kaposi’s sarcoma - Endemic and Epidemic. While endemic KS is unequally distributed in broad pockets around the world, the incidence of epidemic or AIDS-related KS overshadows it, since Kaposi’s Sarcoma-****ociated Herpesvirus (KSHV ) seroprevalence ranges from 30-90% in HIV-positive individuals. Early detection of KS with specific mRNA biomarkers could mean a lower mortality rate for People Living With HIV (PLHW). So, this project intends to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets for early diagnosis and treatment of the disease, using transcriptomic data. The dataset for this project was obtained from the NCBI GEO platform. Exploratory analysis and pre-processing of the data were performed to eliminate outliers. The pre-processed data was further subjected to a differential gene expression analysis followed by Gene Set Enrichment Analysis to identify enriched pathways. 6 differentially expressed genes were identified in each subtype, which have the potential to be used as theranostic targets.
