Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an uncommon and highly malignant skin tumor of neuroendocrine origin that exhibits rapid growth, early distant metastasis, and poor prognosis. About 80% are attributed to Merkel cell polyomavirus and the remainder to UV exposure. The most common metastatic sites are are lymph nodes, liver, lungs, and central nervous system; gastric metastasis is rare. This procedure video illustrates laparoscopic resection of a Merkel cell carcinoma that metastasized to the stomach of a woman in her 70s with an asymptomatic mass of the gastric fundus that was shown to be metabolically active by PET scan.
