Through live illustrations, Mark Kieran, MD, PhD, director of Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, gives an overview of pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors.
As Dr. Kieran explains in our Pediatric Playbook series, tumor symptoms are varied and depend where in the brain or spinal cord they are located. Children may show anything from a lack of coordination to visual problems to seizures to limb weakness. Treatment requires expertise in neurosurgery to remove the tumor, as well as radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
The dedicated Brain Tumor team ensures that patients will have the best possible long-term outcomes. At Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s, the majority of patients survive and lead normal lives.

Meet Lexi. She and her family came to us from Illinois. They were looking for the “best of the best” to treat her brain tumor which was causing epileptic seizures called auras. That’s why they came to Phoenix Children’s. The doctors at Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s were able to perform laser ablation to remove the tumor. This is her story.

#Didyouknow
Some types of #braintumors are more common in children than in adults. The most common types of #pediatrictumors are medulloblastomas, low-grade astrocytomas (pilocytic), ependymomas, craniopharyngiomas and brainstem gliomas.
Brain tumors in children typically come from different tissues than those affecting adults. Treatments that are fairly well-tolerated by the adult brain may prevent normal development of a child's brain, especially in children younger than five years. Welcome to Soton Brain Hub - the brain explained!
Becky joins us for her first video and it is a complex one! It covers a highly aggressive form of brain cancer that effects the glial (support) cells. It mostly effects children and is very difficult to treat, but Becky simplifies it all beautifully and discusses a range of current clinical approaches. This video is a little more niche than our usual content and intended for the more advanced and distinguished clinical neuroscience lovers amongst us 😍
