Surgery for non-small cell lung cancer is quite varied. There is no “one size fits all” because it depends on multiple factors. First of all, it depends on the location of the cancer. Secondly, it depends on the extent of the cancer, for example, to what extent does it involve the lymph nodes and the middle of the chest. Thirdly, it depends on the “cardiopulmonary reserve” of the patient. That includes factors like the amount of normal lung that can be spared from the surgery to ensure that the patient has sufficient lung function after the surgery is completed.
