A thymectomy is the surgical removal of the thymus gland. This is need to cure the tumors of thymus. Thymus is located in the chest just above the heart. Thymectomy can be done by open surgery or minimally invasive surgery (thoracoscopy or robotic). This reduces the compliacations and makes recovery simpler.
Roughly 10 percent of patients with a condition called myasthenia gravis have a thymoma, or a tumor on the thymus gland. They greatly benefit from this surgery.
Please note the dissection and preservation of right phrenic nerve starting at 31 min.
