John Strickler, MD, Duke University, Durham, NC, discusses how the current standard for colorectal biopsy involves tissue samples. The advantages of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) include the evaluation of heterogenous aberrations that may be missed in a tissue sample. Liquid biopsies can assess all lesions concurrently. Furthermore, acquiring a liquid biopsy is less invasive and only requires a blood sample. Liquid biopsy acts as a great accompanying tool to tissue biopsies for detecting acquired of heterogenous variants of GI cancer. This interview took place at the ESMO World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer (WCGIC) 2023 in Barcelona, Spain.
