(AA amyloidosis)

The deposits of serum amyloid A (SAA, protein) over a long period of time. It is produced by the body in response to inflammation or infection. High levels of the protein do not cause it over the short term but a long period of time (several years). It is caused by chronic states of inflammation (poorly controlled rheumatoid arthritis) or chronic states of infection (chronic tuberculosis).

It commonly affects kidneys, liver, and spleen.
