Pituitary tumors are treated by Trans nasal endoscopic and/or microscopic resection.
in this video on "Pituitary Tumor Treatment" a patient shares her experience with treatment by brain surgery and radiation for a pituitary adenoma that she had which produced excess growth hormone and resulted in Acromegaly.
Pituitary adenomas are either Macroadenomas (large size) or Microadenomas(small size). Pituitary gland secretes many hormones including Growth Hormone, Thyroid stimulating Hormone, Cortisol, Prolactin etc.
When these hormones are secreted in excess or are under-secreted, different symptoms and signs become apparent. When Growth Hormone is secreted in excess by pituitary adenomas, it leads to a disease called Acromegaly.
Pituitary gland tumors may also cause vision disturbances like not being able to see clearly in the sides. This is called Hemianopia.
Treatment for Pituitary tumors is generally brain surgery, but done through the nose. It is called Trans nasal or Trans Sphenoidal resection. Pituitary Tumor surgery is quite often followed by radiation to treat the tumor portion in the cavernous sinus.
Many patients are not aware that pituitary tumor is a type of brain tumor. and that it requires brain surgery.
