Cancer is generally defined as the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. One of the common approaches in treatment of cancer is to use drugs that target fast-dividing cells at different phases of the cell cycle. This pharmacology lecture covers topics such as main stages of the cell cycle and mitosis, role of estrogen and testosterone in development of cancer, estrogen and androgen receptors, mechanism of action and side effects of anticancer enzymes and hormone therapy used in treatment of prostate and breast cancer. Covered cancer drugs include Anticancer Enzymes: Asparaginase, Pegaspargase; Aromatase Inhibitors: Anastrozole, Letrozole, and Exemestane; Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): Tamoxifen and Raloxifene; Selective Estrogen Receptor Down-Regulator: Fulvestrant; Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) Agonists: Leuprolide, Goserelin, and Triptorelin; GnRH Antagonist: Degarelix; Antiandrogens: Flutamide, Bicalutamide, Nilutamide, and Abiraterone.
