Cancer is generally defined as the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. One of the common approaches in treatment of cancer is to use drugs that target fast-dividing cells at different phases of the cell cycle. This pharmacology lecture covers topics such as basic overview of DNA synthesis, de novo pathway for purine and pyrimidine nucleotide synthesis, mechanism of action and side effects of antimetabolites used in treatment of cancer. Covered cancer drugs include Hydroxyurea, Cladribine, Fludarabine, Gemcitabine, Cytarabine, Fluorouracil, Capecitabine, and Methotrexate.
