Hoffman et al. reveal the machinery underlying neurotransmission at a gentle-touch receptor. Employing Eccles’ classical criteria for a chemical synapse, they show that epithelial Merkel cells communicate with sensory neurons through β2-adrenergic receptors at excitatory synapses.
