What are the main reasons one would have to have a total laryngectomy?
Okay, so well as for every surgical procedure one has to have a good indication and for a total laryngectomy there are several indications, the foremost and most important reason one would recommend a total laryngectomy is for the diagnosis of an advanced laryngeal and or hypopharyngeal cancer. Why is it because we know that the total larygectomy is a very powerful surgical procedure. Additionally if we focus on cancer, recurrence of cancer in the hypothalamus or the larynx is also a quite common, indication for a total laryngectomy then we call it, if a prior radio chemotherapy has been done then we would talk about a sandwich surgery, so a surgery after a primary non-surgical treatment, and there are of course some other indications that have that sometimes arisen, for instance the state of chronic aspiration where the larynx that is still in place cannot take its functions let's say a safe swallowing so if this is not the case then this organ is maybe a good choice or a good indication to remove the larynx so then at least the swallowing can be rehabilitated and with the voice prosthesis also a voice rehabilitation is usually manageable with good results.
