Cancer-related pain can be caused by different mechanisms:
Cancer itself: can produce inflammatory products that cause you to feel fatigued and stimulate pain receptors.
As a side-effect for many chemotherapy drugs, in many cases it may accompany patients for long time up to years.
As a side-effect for radiation therapy, sometimes this can also be distressful and prolonged.
As an symptom following cancer resection surgery.
Psychological stressors can have a contributing role to the intensity of the pain you feel.
Management of cancer pain:
Itโs important to note that some serious complications of cancer can result in acute pain as bleeding inside the tumor, fracture in an affected bone, spread or invasion of an adjacent organ or nerve. In case you developed acute pain that canโt be controlled by medications prescribed by your doctor donโt hesitate to seek medical help right away.
If you experienced pain talk to you doctor, describe the exact site, severity, type of pain, how often do you experience it, long it lasts and how it affects your life. Your doctor will help you reach a plan for adequate control of this pain.
If your pain is mild analgesics like paracetamol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help control it.
If the pain is moderate to severe, you might need stronger medications as opioids.
In some cases, your doctor might suggest other ways to control pain through procedures or physical therapy.
Other complementary therapies to manage cancer pain are also available, including yoga, relaxation, meditation, massage, acupuncture and other several options. Ask your doctor about the availability of these non-medical options and if they were suitable for you.
Some techniques are also available to help you cope with pain:
Moderate exercises can help you return your muscle strength, regain your energy and reduce the pain. You can request to see a physical or occupational therapist who can guide you through this.
Seeing a dietician and taking vitamin supplements can help you get your strength back to stand against pain, as fatigue due to malnutrition and poor appetite can interfere with pain control.
Take as much rest as you need and avoid psychological stressors. If you have low mood or feeling sad or depressed tell your doctor, depression has a role in worsening pain and managing it will help in controlling your pain.
