Abstract: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare neoplasms that occur predominantly in the stomach or the small intestine. They can result in ulcer-like pain or gastrointestinal bleeding. Although GISTs are submucosal lesions, forceps biopsies are usually normal. Therefore, other ways of obtaining histology should be used, for instance needle-knife biopsies or endoscopic ultrasound-guided biopsies.

The biological behavior depends on location, size, and mitosis activity. In general, GISTs require surgical resection. Patient with high-risk lesions should receive adjuvant chemotherapy with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. This article is part of an expert video encyclopedia.
