Commonest #symptom of #esophagus (#food #pipe) cancer is difficulty in swallowing food and drinking water. If diagnosis is made at early stage, #treatment is possible.

Smoking and alcohol are predisposing factors for squamous cell cancer. #gerd is risk facotr for #barrett esophagus and adenocarcinoma.

Symptoms are
• Difficult in swallowing, (Dysphagia),
• Difficulty in drinking water,
• Chest pain,
• Weight loss and
• Gland swelling in neck

Diagnosed is confirmed by upper GI endoscopy and biopsy
Staging is done by CT scan, PET scan, EUS and NBI

Treatment depends upon stage of disease
• Very early disease: Endoscopic submucosal dissection. ESD is endoscopic procedure and is curative if tumor is confined to mucosa only
• Early cancer: Surgery. For middle and lower esophagus. Upper one third esophagus cancers are treated by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
• Advanced tumor: Chemotherapy and radiotherapy followed by surgery
• Very advanced tumor: Self expandable metal Stent(SEMS) placement followed by chemotherapy
