Ependymoma is a pediatric brain tumor of ependymal cells, which line the ventricles of the brain. The 4th ventricle is often affected, which may lead to CSF outflow obstruction and subsequent hydrocephalus. Pathology is remarkable for perivascular pseudorosettes, a highly characteristic finding in ependymoma. Additionally, ependymal cells contain rod-like structures at the base of cilia referred to as blepharoplasts (basal ciliary bodies). In ependymomas, great numbers of blepharoplasts are seen on electron microscopy.
