Abstract: Systemic mastocytosis is a heterogeneous disease of the bone marrow with abnormal proliferation and infiltration of mast cells in the skin and viscera, including the mucosal surfaces of the digestive tract. Gastrointestinal symptoms are frequent and may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and bloating.
A case of macroscopic involvement of the colon is presented herein. It is important to recognize the endoscopic appearance of this disorder and to communicate the suspicion to the pathologist so that special stains may be performed, allowing the information to contribute to the diagnosis.
