Dr. Jennifer Linehan, Urologic Oncologist at Saint John's Health Center, Director of Urology Translational Research, and Associate Professor at Saint John's Cancer Institute, reveals critical information about symptoms and the latest innovative treatments for bladder cancer. Blood in the urine, including microscopic amounts, is often an early indicator that something is wrong within the renal system, while urine tests and specialized equipment help identify if cancer cells are present and if a tumor is located in the bladder or somewhere close by. This would include cancer in the upper tracts, or the ureters (tubes that channel urine from the kidneys into the bladder), which may indicate a different type of cancer (urothelial carcinoma). Additional treatments are bladder-specific, including the use of chemical washes (liquid treatments that temporarily fills the bladder) that deliver chemotherapy or BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin), an immunotherapy drug that improves immune response signaling. Dr. Linehan also discusses clinical trials, bladder preservation, and cancer prevention.
