The cause of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and the loss of cognitive function has been thought to be caused by the buildup of plaque in the brain, but new research is looking at the potential of soluble beta-amyloid protein loss as being the actual causal factor.

AD impacts 55 million people worldwide, but studies have shown that plaque build up does not always equate to dementia.

If the loss of beta amyloid proves to be important then scientists could find new methods of treating AD patients.
