Some myths about cancer are surprisingly persistent, despite flying in the face of biology. One such idea is that overly ‘acidic’ diets cause your blood to become ‘too acidic’, which can increase your risk of cancer. Retinoblastoma is a rare type of eye cancer that usually develops in early childhood, before the age of 5. It develops in the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that detects light and colour.

In children with retinoblastoma, the disease most often affects one eye. The most common first sign of retinoblastoma is a visible whiteness in the pupil called leukocoria. This is particularly noticeable in dim light or in photographs taken with a flash. Other signs and symptoms of retinoblastoma include crossed eyes or eyes that do not point in the same direction (strabismus), ; a change in the colour of the coloured part of the eye (iris); redness, soreness, or swelling of the eyelids; and blindness or poor vision in the affected eye or eyes.

Retinoblastoma is often curable when it is diagnosed early. However, if it is not treated promptly, this cancer can spread beyond the eye to other parts of the body. This advanced form of retinoblastoma can be life-threatening.

In 2015 Ron was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. He received traditional, but debilitating, chemotherapy treatment for 9 months. #CIM18 #PatientStories

He wasn’t able to eat or sleep, and his devastated wife, Maria, searched for other options. In 2016, after learning he carried a genetic mutation linked to Lynch syndrome, Ron began a nivolumab/ipilimumab combination immunotherapy on a clinical trial at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Today, Ron continues to receive nivo/ipi as part of routine care and, for the past 2 years, has had no evidence of disease progression. “I am able to live on immunotherapy,” Ron explained. http://www.cancerresearch.org/patients
