Acute myeloid leukemia, often shortened to AML, is a type of cancer affecting the stem cells in the bone marrow.
There are a number of tests that are used to diagnose AML. To start with, your doctor will perform a physical examination and arrange for blood tests.
Blood tests are performed to look for changes in the numbers and appearance of the different types of cells in the blood. The presence of an abnormally high number of white blood cells could be an indication of AML and further testing would be needed.

In this video, Dr. Sandra Kurtin explains treatment-related acute myeloid leukemia, or tAML. This type of AML develops in people who previously had cancer treatment with radiation or certain types of chemotherapy. These treatments can damage the cells. You may develop treatment-related AML just two or three years after cancer treatment. Or it may appear as late as 10 years after treatment. The timing depends partly on what type of treatment you had.
