Today we will be talking about Stomach cancer.
The stomach is a vital organ in our digestive tract. It is located in our upper abdomen and connects the esophagus with the small intestine. It functions as a reservoir to temporarily hold our meals and at the same time aids in the digestion of our food.
Gastric cancer occurs when the cells in the stomach wall undergo uncontrolled division to produce a malignant tumor.
Stomach cancer is the 7th most common cancer in men and the 9th most common cancer in women in our local population.
Each year, Stomach cancer takes more than 300 lives in Singapore.
If detected early, it is potentially curable - so please continue to watch this video to find out more about the signs and symptoms of gastric cancer and who are at risk of getting it.
Please click on the subscribe button if you are new to our channel.
The Risk factors of gastric cancer are
- Infection with Helicobacter Pylori bacteria. This is a bacteria that I have previously talked about in another video on my channel. Please click on the link on your top right for more information on h.pylori
- Long term stomach inflammation
- smoking
- family history of gastric cancer
- dietary factors: diet high in salt, smoked and preserved foods, and a diet low in fruits and vegetables
As with most cancer, early stomach cancers tend to be silent.
However if you do suffer from these symptoms, then please seek consultation with your family doctor or specialist.
- upper abdominal pain
- bloatedness or indigestion after meals
- loss of appetite and loss of weight
- persistent nausea and vomiting
- persistent heartburn symptoms
- black tarry stools
Recently, There have been some exciting developments in the field of gastric cancer screening coming from Singapore called gastroclear.
Gastroclear is a blood test that actually detects abnormal levels of microRNA released from Gastric cancer cells.
It has been said to be able to detect up to 87% of all gastric cancer and is being evaluated currently to be rolled out for population-wide screening in the primary care scene.
I’m keeping my eyes on this development. Really exciting stuff.
So How can you prevent stomach cancer?
It's all about the lifestyle, isn’t it?
If you’ve watched enough of my videos, you will have realized already that many illnesses and diseases can be treated with lifestyle changes.
- stop smoking
- avoid processed food ( I have shared more in my previous video on why you should not take processed food )
- reduce salt intake
- increase the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables in your meals
- maintaining a healthy weight by staying physically active
( again click on the top right of your screen now to learn about the ways to fight cancer the natural way )
If your doctor suspects that you may be suffering from gastric cancer, then we will refer you for diagnostic testings like
- gastric endoscopy
- barium meal X-rays.
Adopt a healthy lifestyle to keep gastric cancer away from you.
Take note of the symptoms and do seek medical consultation when you develop symptoms suggestive of gastric cancer.
The last thing you want to do is to ignore your symptoms.
Early detection ensures early diagnosis, and often that leads to a better outcomes.

Radical lymphadenectomy can improve tumor staging accuracy and long-term survival of patients with gastric cancer. The procedure is typically performed by eye and depends on a surgeon’s experience. Indocyanine green (ICG) near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent imaging has improved sentinel lymph node localization in other cancers and has been incorporated into laparoscopic device technology. This procedure video illustrates ICG tracer-guided complementary dissection of residual lymph node-bearing soft tissue after laparoscopic radical gastrectomy and general lymph node dissection in a patient with gastric cancer. Click https://ja.ma/2VlYnRr for a video illustrating the preoperative injection of ICG tracer, https://ja.ma/2w2tXJu for a video of the general lymph node dissection procedure, https://ja.ma/2I0Glw9 for a video of in vitro lymph node retrieval under direct NIR imaging, and https://ja.ma/2vfIAsU for a complete discussion of the procedure and the findings from a trial comparing it with non-ICG tracer-guided lymph node dissection.
