Stomach cancer, or gastric cancer, is when cancerous cells form in the lining of the stomach. Cancer may spread from where it began in the stomach, to other parts of the body. Hence, staging is a way of describing cancer: Where it is located, if or where it has spread, and whether it is affecting other parts of the body.

When stomach cancer is discovered early, there is a better chance of recovery. At later stages, stomach cancer may require more systemic treatments and have poorer recovery rates.
