Patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma face frightening, life-threatening symptoms, as well as others that affect their quality of life. The combination of the two creates a level of misery that leads to depression and, for some, withdrawal. A physician from the United Kingdom has found a simple but effective answer that has addressed one of the more irritating issues these patients face – drooling and trouble with swallowing caused by the disease’s spread.

Drooling is a Common Problem for Mesothelioma Patients.

Uncontrollable drooling and trouble swallowing are common issues faced by patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Known to the medical community as sialorrhoea, the condition appears in mesothelioma patients when their tumors spread from the pleural cavity to their thyroid gland. Both the tumors and some of the treatments used to treat them can lead to problems with swallowing, which in turn leads to drooling. But Dr. Claire Plunkett of Farleigh Hospice in Chelmsford, UK has found a solution to the problem that relieves the problem quickly and effectively.

In attempting to help her patients and improve their quality of life, Dr. Plunkett tested the use of a drug called glycopyrronium. Available as an injectable, in inhaled form, a topical and via intravenous, the drug is most commonly used in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, to address excess sweating, coughing, wheezing, peptic ulcers and breathlessness.

Mesothelioma Patient Treated With Inhaler Finds Fast Relief.

Glycopyrronium had previously been used to treat drooling in mesothelioma patients, but the treatment was administered via injection. Dr. Plunkett tested its use in an inhaled format, finding that delivery was both more convenient and more effective. The 73-year-old patient she treated with the inhaler experienced relief in a period of just 48 hours, with a dose that was significantly lower than what he had been receiving via injection.

According to Dr. Plunkett, the patient suffers from the more aggressive form of mesothelioma known as sarcomatoid mesothelioma, yet after receiving just a few doses of 55 μg of glycopyrronium bromide per puff he experienced an abatement of symptoms. “He reported a significant decrease in his symptoms 2 days after initiation using a numerical rating scale,” she wrote. “A regular dose of one puff two times per day completely resolved the patient’s symptoms within 5 days.”

Asbestos-Contaminated Talc Central to Old Spice Mesothelioma Lawsuit.

Willie McNeal Jr., a Vietnam War veteran and retired school bus driver, was awarded $4.8 million by a California Superior Court jury that determined asbestos-contaminated talc led to his diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Whittaker, Clark & Daniels, a longtime talc supplier now based in South Plainfield, New Jersey, was ordered to pay McNeal $1.8 million in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages.

The verdict stemmed from evidence presented that an Old Spice powder product, used almost daily by McNeal for more than 20 years, contained talc from a mine in North Carolina known to be contaminated by toxic asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral that can cause mesothelioma cancer.

Old Spice is a registered trademark of Procter & Gamble, which discontinued the powder product many years ago.

McNeal, 78, was diagnosed in 2017, a year before his case was filed against more than a dozen defendants.

According to court records, Johnson & Johnson, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Pep Boys and AutoZone Inc. also were named as contributors to his cancer diagnosis. All but Whittaker, Clark & Daniels settled before the trial began in April.

Whittaker, Clark & Daniels has been a major talc supplier for several companies, including Revlon, Avon and Chanel.

The talc company settled a similar case recently with a California woman who said her mesothelioma was caused by contaminated talc. The undisclosed settlement came four days after proceedings began at the same California Superior Court, and only a week after McNeal’s trial had concluded.

Nonoccupational Asbestos Exposure Growing.

Whittaker, Clark & Daniels continues to insist that its talc is safe and does not cause cancer, but it has been battling the accusations by mesothelioma patients since 2015.

The first case against the company involved a New York woman who was awarded $7 million when it was ruled that asbestos-contaminated talc in Desert Flower powder led to her mesothelioma.

In 2016, the talc used in a barber shop resulted in a record-setting $18 million verdict against Whittaker, Clark & Daniels after the son of a barber there was diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Although the majority of contaminated talc cases involve ovarian cancer, the number of mesothelioma cases has grown significantly in the past few years.

According to KCIC, a well-respected consulting firm that manages asbestos product liabilities, there has been a steady decline in traditional mesothelioma lawsuits stemming from occupational exposure to asbestos in the past three years. However, there also has been a rise in cases involving talc and nonoccupational exposure to asbestos during the same time period.

Nonoccupational exposure cases have gone from 33% to 45% for men and from 46% to 57% for women.

The issue of contaminated talc, considered the world’s softest mineral, stems from where it is mined near the Earth’s surface. Talc and asbestos deposits often are found in close proximity.

Talc Litigation Becoming More Common.

The regularity of mesothelioma lawsuits involving talc is expected to continue increasing in the coming months throughout the country, particularly where the COVID-19 pandemic had created a major backlog of civil litigation.

Another talc jury trial involving cosmetic talc and mesothelioma opened May 5, one of the first in Washington state since the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown a year ago. In the opening statements, attorneys for the plaintiff blamed the use of Johnson’s Baby Powder for the mesothelioma cancer.

Johnson & Johnson has said it is facing more than 25,000 lawsuits related to its various talc products that have allegedly caused cancers, primarily due to asbestos contamination.

According to regulatory filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Johnson & Johnson has set aside almost $4 billion for talc-related litigation.

How Did Joe Sample Get Mesothelioma?

Joe Sample, a musician who became a household name by pushing the limits of jazz music, died of mesothelioma on Sept. 12 in his hometown of Houston. He was 75.

The legendary keyboard player and composer is known as the founder of the Jazz Crusaders, a bebop ensemble that originated in his high school days. The group later dropped Jazz from its name and became known as The Crusaders a band with a distinctive, amalgamated jazz, funk, blues and soul sound.

Although his family confirmed he died of mesothelioma, news reports do not explain how he developed the asbestos-related cancer that affects nearly 3,000 people a year in the U.S.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive disease that can affect the lungs, heart or abdomen. It is primarily caused by exposure to asbestos, which is a naturally-occurring mineral that was commonly used prior to the 1980s in insulation products in homes and public buildings.

The asbestos-related cancer has an unfavorable prognosis with an average life expectancy of nine to 24 months. It can take anywhere from 15 to 50 years after exposure before the symptoms become obvious and a diagnosis is made.

Reports also show Sample had suffered other serious health problems, including two heart attacks and bouts of fatigue caused by Epstein-Barr virus.

Sample’s Contribution to the Black Community and Jazz.

The Crusaders’ name change signaled a new musical direction for the group and the introduction of electronic instruments into the jazz scene, including Sample s keyboard.

The group was one the first to fuse many different sounds that once were separate genres.

Sample was a creative genius with no limits. For him, plugging in and making musical history wasn t intimidating. His ear for catchy riffs and a true passion for making great, honest music, despite cultural norms, landed him opportunities to collaborate with classic performers, including Miles Davis, B. B. King, Eric Clapton, George Benson, Jimmy Witherspoon, Steely Dan and The Supremes.

Sample s music was often inspired by the world and people around him.

“In the Sixties, we had emotion, passion and feeling in our music and I wrote a composition to support the sit-inners and marchers in the civil rights struggle,” Sample said during a 2012 interview with Jazz Times in 2012.

After the demise of The Crusaders in the late 1980s, Sample launched a career as a solo artist, releasing his “Ashes to Ashes” album, which focused on the struggles of blacks at the time and their efforts to save their communities.

As a composer, Sample wrote many successful songs, including Street Life and One Day I ll Fly Away, which Nicole Kidman covered in the film “Moulin Rouge.”

Sample is survived by wife Yolanda; son Nicklas, a bassist who performed with him in the Creole Joe Band; sister Julia Goolsby; three stepsons, Justin, Jamerson III and Jordan Berry; and six grandchildren.

Other Celebrities Who Died of Mesothelioma.

Although mesothelioma is usually associated with those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces or those who worked in blue-collar professions, like steel mills or shipyards, the disease continues to affect countless others outside those careers.

Over the past several years, the asbestos-related cancer has claimed the lives of many celebrities, including entertainers, government officials and even an Olympic gold medalist.

Prior to Samples’ death, actor Ed Lauter died of mesothelioma in October 2013. His wife is now suing several American conglomerate giants, including CBS Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Georgia-Pacific LLC and John CraneGarlock, EnPro Reach $480M Settlement for Asbestos Claims Inc., among others.

Lauter was diagnosed with mesothelioma in June 2013.

Actor Steve McQueen, football player and actor Merlin Olsen, and musician and songwriter Warren Zevon also died of mesothelioma.
