January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and medical professionals say that prevention is their most important focus for this disease.

Senior Medical Officer for Gynaecology at the Scarborough Hospital, Dr. Leslie Ann Bishop, says many deaths can be prevented by checking up with the doctor if you get symptoms of abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge.

Dr. Bishop says this type of cancer is deadly and yet it can be treated if caught in time.

The doctor says breast cancer is the only disease trumping cervical cancer deaths. She is urging women to go for the medical tests, which if done in time, can lessen this statistic.
