Anal cancer can start in any part of the anus. The anus is the opening at the very end of the large bowel. In men, anal margin tumors are more common, while in women, cancers that start higher up in the anal canal are more common. In most cases, cancers of the anal margin look more like normal cells, and are called well differentiated tumors. Different types of anal cancer exist, which means that your type depends on the type of cell in which the cancer starts. This can determine the treatment options.

Squamous cell cancers are very common, and start in squamous cells that make up the lining of the anal canal. The lining of the transitional zone is made up of both glandular and squamous cells. The mucus which helps stools (feces) to smoothly pass through the anus is made by glandular cells, and on very rare cases, anal cancer can develop from the glandular cells. This is called adenocarcinoma of the anus. Another rare type of anal cancer is melanoma, starting in cells in the skin called melanocytes.
