So let’s talk a bit more about acute myeloid leukemia, an illness bob Collymore bravely fought till the end. This is a type of cancer that starts in the bone marrow and affects the blood forming cells. Which cells in particular? Well... It affects red blood cells which transport oxygen from the lungs across the body. It affects platelets that are crucial in helping your body to stop bleeding and it also affects white blood cells that are responsible for fighting infections in the body. Let’s look at some common risk factors that can affect your chances of getting this disease. You are more likely to suffer from this disease as you get older…in addition it is more common in males than females. The risk is increased if you are exposed to certain chemicals such as benzene used in the rubber and oil industry. Also the chemicals found in cigarette smoke. Being exposed to radiation is another risk as well as having certain blood disorders or genetic syndromes. Finally in terms of treatment the main treatment for most types of aml is chemotherapy, sometimes along with a targeted therapy drug. This might be followed by a stem cell transplant (a procedure in which a patient receives healthy blood-forming cells (stem cells) to replace their own). Surgery and radiation therapy are not major treatments for aml, but they may be used in special circumstances.
