To remove the tumour in a case of throat cancer, the larynx tends to have to come with it. But there are ways to regain one's voice again. The most common is the pneumatic artificial larynx, which uses a plastic tube in the tracheal hole; another is tracheoesophageal speech, which involves plugging the tracheal hole.
