Ruben Mesa, MD of the Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, AZ discusses needs not met by medical therapies of myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), and the development of a portfolio of resources for patients with MPNs, as well as chronic hematologic malignancies. Needs not met by medical therapies include mood disorders, anxiety, stress, and some symptoms. Prof. Mesaโ€™s group has helped to quantify MPN symptoms by developing tools. This has highlighted the need for non-pharmacological intervention to further help patients, such as yoga. A trial for a home-based yoga program, designed specifically for MPN patients is completing accrual. The aim of this is to learn the feasibility of delivering such interventions. His group is also measuring correlative biomarker components including cytokines, cortisol, as well as impact on blood counts and inflammation. The measurements have given initial readouts showing significant improvement in a range of symptoms including insomnia, fatigue, flexibility, and activity. Further studies hope to examine the effects of the meditative and physical parts of yoga. Prof. Mesa suggests that research in this area is still limited in hematology. Recorded at the 2016 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting, held in San Diego, CA.
