In April 2016, Zion, then 2yo experienced fever for three (3) days which was initially diagnosed as dengue. But with further medical tests which yielded a hemoglobin count of 68, they were advised that Zion might be suffering from either anemia or leukemia. They sought medical consultation at PCMC where Zion was immediately admitted. Laboratory tests confirmed he was suffering B-Cell ALL, standard risk.

Upon hearing the news, it did not sink in right away. Elmira, the mother of Zion, was overwhelmed with emotion. The doctor briefed them about treatment protocol and medication. They were also advised that Zion was qualified for the Z package benefits under Philhealth. But even with the Z package assistance, the family was struggling due to the high cost of chemotherapy. Thus, on March 25, 2017, they sought the help of KKMK Foundation wherein Zion was included in the Batang K program.

Throughout the course of Zion's chemotherapy, he was completely cooperative and brave. Whenever he was about to be injected, Zion would say, “In Jesus name”, much to the amusement of his doctor. At such a young age, he would not let her mother know he was in pain. Instead, he would ask her mother to play a Christian song about keeping us under the Lord’s wing, entitled “ Still”. It seemed that Zion was drawing strength from the message of the song. Later on, Zion would add Christian songs – Goodness of God and Holy Spirit to his playlist and has been his constant source of comfort.

Even while undergoing chemotherapy, Zion attended regular school. During Kindergarten, Zion was awarded, “Best Reader” while in Grade 1, he was awarded as “Most Friendly” and “Most Cooperative”.

After four (4) years of chemotherapy treatment, Zion, now 7years old, has graduated though there was no ceremony to commemorate his graduation from chemotherapy due to the pandemic. Zion now is on the monitoring stage for one (1) year and will continue to be for the next 4 years. Under monitoring, Zion needs to be monitored of his CBC monthly, TIT every 3 months and BMA every 6 months during the course of the monitoring stage. So, Zion still needs funds/donations while in the monitoring stage.

As a brave and survivor warrior, Zion would not let his illness dampen his spirit. During the pandemic, he found a new hobby – vlogging! He has his own youtube account where he posts about Beyblade!
