Pancreatic cancer is deadly. 98% of the patients of pancreatic cancer die. Out of all the risk factors, cigarette smoking is the most important consistent reversible risk factor. Smoking increases the risk of pancreatic cancer by 2-3 times.

Risk factors for pancreatic cancer are:
1. Male gender
2. Age greater than 50 years
3. Black race
4. Cigarette smoking
5. Chronic pancreatitis
6. Chronic diabetes
7. Obesity
8. Familial pancreatitis
9. Pancreatic cancer in a close relative.
