My Anal Cancer Journey Part II (Cancer Staging)
On Sept 3rd, I found out what stage my cancer was. The previous 5 days were some of the worst in my life. I struggled with the fear of dying and had many sleepless nights. On a few occasions I was so overwhelmed that I had to call friends at 4 or 5 in the morning to get grounded once again. I did a lot of research on anal cancer and found this organization (so grateful for that). Having had cancer 5 times before I intimately understand the importance of staging and what it means in surviving cancer. When I received the news that my cancer was in stage 2 I was overwhelmed with gratitude. People misunderstood my exuberance for not really getting that cancer is a serious disease. Well, on the contrary, because I truly understand cancer I get how fortunate I am that it was not stage 3 or 4. Here is my reaction in my doctors office minutes after learning the stage of the cancer.
