#KwentoNgKapwa: Joshua Daquila

Joshua Daquila, 5yo kid, youngest in a brood of two (2), living in Cainta, Rizal with his family has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) on September 18, 2020. He is currently in the maintenance phase, 6th month. Joshua needs to complete this phase for 36 months. He is a z package (also called z beneficiary) qualifier and currently undergoing chemotherapy at National Children’s Hospital (NCH).

Joshua spent two (2) weeks at his aunt's home. And while playing, he accidentally fell off the ground. Two weeks after the incident, Joshua was feeling tired and breathless most of the time, had no appetite and had bruised skin. At the height of the pandemic, they sought medical attention from different hospitals but they were either turned down or were diagnosed with an infection and were sent home. Out of desperation and anxiety, the family also sought help from a faith healer. Still, Joshua wasn’t doing any better. Joshua then was referred to NCH for further evaluation. Upon completion of the blood tests, the attending doctor required Joshua to undergo bone marrow analysis (BMA) to confirm the initial diagnosis but the parents refused to do the BMA.

Parents could not accept the fact that Joshua has ALL as to their belief, this is too much of a diagnosis due to a “fall”. Parents signed a hospital waiver and requested to be discharged. Parents wanted to seek a second opinion from different hospitals but due to covid-19, hospitals were unable to accommodate them. Running out of options, Joshua’s parents opted to return to NCH. Luckily, Joshua was admitted again and was given immediate medical attention. However, the parents were not keen on doing the BMA just yet. It took them at least 10 doctors to convince them to do the procedure. After a lengthy explanation and encouraging words from the doctors, the parents finally accepted the dreaded reality that Joshua is suffering from ALL. Subsequently, BMA was done and chemotherapy was immediately scheduled.
